About Seiko Dive Watches

Seiko made its first dive watch, the 150 meter automatic, in 1965. Designers at Seiko thought that making a dive watch was important for their company, because a dive watch is the ultimate test of watch-making skills. A dive watch has to be waterproof, shockproof, and highly luminous. At this time divers literally placed their lives in the hands of their watches. Two years later, in 1967, Seiko engineers released the 300m automatic dive watch. Doubling the depth at which a Seiko dive watch could be used was a great achievement. In 1968 they released the third dive watch model, which used the same watch movement as the Grand Seiko. Following the release of three dive watch models in only four years the Seiko engineers were in for a surprise which delayed the release of their next professional dive watch model for seven years.

The Seiko engineers received a letter from a professional diver who worked at depths of more than 300m using SAT diving techniques. In his letter, he complained that the crystals on Seiko dive watches often broke because they filled with helium gas used in SAT diving. He also complained that the Seiko dive watches were not shockproof, and they often stopped working if they were accidentially hit against rocks underwater. He actually ended his letter by saying these watches were unacceptable for professional divers. Seiko management took the letter very seriously and they assigned a special team to design an entirely new dive watch, one that would be created specifically with the professional diver in mind.

When Seiko introduced its first dive watch in 1965, the market for these watches was relatively small. Towards the end of the 1960's thru the mid-70's, the popularity dive watches increased dramatically. Despite this fact, Seiko didn't release a new model for seven years, from 1968 to 1975. Seiko Sports division was focused on developing the Professional Diver series, which was released in 1975.
